5 Ways That Honey Can Benefit Your Pooch

The amazing benefits of honey

You may have read about the many ways that honey can benefit your health. But, did you know that it is great for your Chihuahua too?

Some of the reasons that honey is so good for their health are that it is naturally high in enzymes, high in antioxidants and flavonoids, and it kills anti-resistant bacteria including MRSA. You can use it to naturally treat:
  • Allergies
  • Burns, infections and hot spots
  • Kennel Cough
  • Digestion
  • Energy

Allergies:

Just like us, dogs also can suffer from environmental allergies. Symptoms may show up in the spring, summer, and fall. Things to look for are rubbing the face, licking and scratching.

Type:

Make sure to use local raw, unfiltered honey, or even better, local raw wildflower honey.  The wildflower honey is best because it covers so many different plants and flowers. This can often be purchased from bee farms.  Avoid Manuka honey when using for allergies since you need a local, raw honey.

Directions:

Use 1 teaspoon of local raw wildflower honey daily or 1/2 teaspoon twice a day. Adjust accordingly for larger dogs. It must be given daily to have the desired benefits.

Burns, infections and hot spots:

Type:

The best honey for this is Manuka Honey. Tests have shown that honey eliminates bacterial infections, reduces inflammation, swelling and pain and encourages the growth of new skin. It seals the area and keeps it moist.

Directions:

Trim the hair around the area. Clean with vinegar, apply a thick coat of Manuka Honey and cover with a bandage. The best type of bandage to use for dogs are the ones that self-stick. Veterinarians use it in their practice. You MUST trim or shave the area. If not all the bacteria and pus can become trapped within the hair. It’s also a MUST to clean the area before applying the honey.

A good thing to use for this is Povidone Iodine. Most pharmacy’s or supermarkets carry it. Dilute the iodine with water until it is the color of ice tea. Use a soft gauze to gently blot and clean the area. Apply a thin layer of Manuka honey to the spot and cover with a bandage. Don’t let the dog lick the area. This is where an Elizabethan collar comes in handy until the area is healed.

Repeat this process twice a day. If the spot gets larger instead of healing, be sure to consult with your veterinarian.

It is very important to use Manuka Honey in a liquid form. Do Not use crystallized honey or a burn or an open wound! The crystals are sharp and cause pain on the open wound.

Kennel Cough:

Type:

Use Manuka Honey for dogs with symptoms of kennel cough.

Directions:

1 teaspoon daily or 1/2 teaspoon twice a day. Adjust aount for larger dogs according to their weight. If your Chihuahua is less than 5 lbs I’d suggest using a little less.

Digestion:

Type:

Also, use Manuka Honey for digestive issues.

Directions:

Use 1 teaspoon daily or 1/2 teaspoon twice a day for Chihuahuas. Use a little less for Chis under 5 lbs. Adjust according to weight for larger dogs.

Energy:

Honey is a natural source of carbohydrates that increase energy. Honey is especially beneficial for older dogs whose energy level has decreased.

Type:

You guessed it — Manuka Honey works best

Directions:

Again use 1 teaspoon daily or 1/2 teaspoon twice a day for Chihuahuas at least 5 lbs, less if they weight less than 5 lbs. Adjust accordingly for larger dogs.
