Many pet parents are under the impression that the foods sold by their veterinarian are top of the line and better for their dog(s). Here are 5 reasons that may not be the case.

• These so-called “premium” foods contain ingredients like chicken by-product meal which consists of the leftovers in meat processing that are unfit for human consumption.
• It is a cheap, low-quality source of protein and far less digestible protein than a clean chicken meal.
• Although the formulas may contain a few specialized ingredients that they claim as a special diet for health conditions, a better way is to treat these conditions with truly healthy food and daily supplements.
• The high grain content of many of these foods is one of the main contributors to the growing obesity problem and the increase in allergies in dogs and cats. (grain is not bad for them, it’s the high amount of grain)
• Many of the dog foods sold exclusively through veterinarians were recently reported by the FDA to be linked to the increase in heart disease in dogs.

To put it in perspective, our veterinarians are a very necessary part of taking good care of our Chihuahuas. But, just like human doctors, they don’t know everything. In veterinarian school, classes on nutrition consisted of only a few required hours. Of course, some were particularly interested in that part of animal health and went on to complete many more hours on nutrition training. But the vast majority have very few hours training in nutrition.

Although they genuinely care about animal health, a veterinary clinic or a veterinary hospital is, after all, a business. They sell certain dog foods, to make a profit, not necessarily to protect your dog’s health.

The best nutrition:

Nutrition is the foundation of good health for our furry buddies. Diet is the most important component of your pet’s health care. The best diet for your dog is not unlike the best diet for you – it consists of a variety of whole foods enhanced with vitamins and minerals, enzymes and supplements, when necessary, to promote optimal health, prevent disease or to address health issues.

Carnivores or Omnivores?

Many people still believe that dogs are carnivores. Actually, just like humans, they are omnivores. What does that mean?

An omnivore is an animal that has the ability to eat and survive on both plant and animal matter. Obtaining energy and nutrients from plant and animal matter, omnivores digest carbohydrates, protein, fat, and fiber, and metabolize the nutrients and energy of the sources absorbed. ~ Wikipedia
