A fellow Chihuahua pawrent and the proud owner of our partner site, Famous Chihuahua, shared this story with us. It’s a harrowing story of how one tiny little Chihuahua survives an opioid poisoning. It also serves as a warning and a reminder to all of us Chihuahua pawrents. It reminds us how important it is for us to stay alert whenever we are out and about with our precious Chihuahuas!
Nadia and her little Chi, Lupini live in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. One Wednesday they were near a middle school when “All of a sudden our chihuahua came over to us and she was out of it. Her tongue was hanging right out, she couldn’t even walk. She had no control of her bowel movements,” Nadia said.

Alarmed by the symptoms, Nadia rushed Lupini to Pawsitive Veterinary Care in Kelowna. Thankfully, the vet team quickly recognized the signs of opioid poisoning and administered naloxone.
“She instantly came back. We didn’t think she was going to make it,” Nadia told Castanet.net, a major news website and media outlet. “She is good now. We couldn’t believe it. The naloxone is what saved her, she added.
Nadia says she now wants to raise awareness about the danger of toxic substances in public areas and urges pet owners everywhere to be vigilant when walking their pets.
I want to thank Nadia for sharing her story of how her little Chihuahua survived an opioid poisoning, with ChiChis And Me. I hope everyone will be just a little more diligent when walking with their Chihuahuas. It could have been such a tragedy if Nadial had not acted swiftly and the vet team had not responded immediately to save Lupini’s life.
We are all so delighted that it turned out well for Nadia and her beloved little dog, Lupini!
