Freezing Chihuahua Rescued From Locked Car

Chihuahua News

Every summer we hear about dogs being left in a hot car. But, I think this is the first time I’ve heard this kind of Chihuahua news story. I’m sure it’s happened before, I just don’t remember hearing about it.

What is so sad about this Chihuahua news story, is the owner doesn’t think he did anything wrong and claims the dog wasn’t cold, just scared.

From the New York Times

January 8, 2018

Manhattan police were forced to break into a car to rescue a shivering Chihuahua locked in a car in 10-degree temperatures.“If the cops hadn’t gotten into the car, the dog surely would have died,” witness Matteo Prandoni, 43, recalled Sunday. “The dog was in such a shock and freezing, he didn’t bark. The dog got as close as possible to the jacket of the officer [who helped rescue him] to look for warmth.”

The Police were alerted by a man who had witnessed the Poor little Chihuahua in the car, shivering. They pried the car door open and rescued the Chi and left a note on the car to go to the precinct. There he was promptly arrested and charged.

Haoyang Chen studies biomedicinal engineering at a college in Philadelphia, was arraigned Sunday. A judge released him without bail and ordered him to return to court Feb. 23.

Chen claimed that the police were overreacting and had blown things way out of proportion. Chen said he and his girlfriend adopted the dog (Mary) because they love her and want to protect her. He claimed that Mary was shaking because she was scared of strangers, not because she was cold. (Really? in 10 degree temperatures?) He said she is different from other dogs and always feel scared and shakes. (I wonder why?)

They placed Mary with Animal Care Control and Chen said that he and his girlfriend were going to try to get her back.

People Need to be Educated

I have no doubt that this couple loves Mary. But, sometimes I am astounded by some peoples, what can be called nothing less than stupidity. It’s lack of education. He apparently had heard that Chihuahuas shake. It’s true that Chihuahuas shake sometimes for a number of different reasons, including being cold. But it was his understanding that they just shake as part of their breed and therefore because she was shaking it was no indication to him that she was cold.

There should be required education on the breed of dog being considered before it is allowed to be adopted!
